and I always look forward to your diaries, but especially interested in this once since I'm going to Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, and the Seychelles from December - February! Your photos, particularly of the cats, managed to make me even more excited than I was before, which I didn't think was possible!!

I agree with you that Kauai is the most beautiful island in many ways, it certainly looks the most like what people think of when they think Hawaii, it's almost Tahiti-like in its jagged peaks and brilliant colors. But I'm also partial to the moonscape of my own island; from the volcano, to the valleys, black sand beaches, and my own gorgeous little mountain, Hualalai, with its koa forests and wild pigs and horses. I love my home, but the vog in the last few years has been a real bummer.

The Big Island is something else altogether. I haven't been over there enough times.  The vog has to really be a huge bummer.  It has even been a bummer over here on Oahu this odd, windless spring.  I have had many days with burning eyes and a sore chest. I can only imagine what it is like over there.
