    My wife's previous doctor refused to do a particular diagnostic test because she did not want to fight the insurance company to get it covered and did not want to risk that we might not pay in case of denial. Two years and one doctor later, they finally did the test and it turns out she had a disease that was destroying her stomach. By the time we got the correct diagnosis, she was severely malnourished. We are still trying to assess the long-term damage.

    We should not have to pick our doctors based on their willingness and ability to fight insurance companies, but sometimes that is the only way to get the health care we need.
