  •  not a factor, I think (none)
Some of Washington's most heavily Native counties are also its most Republican counties.

For instance, in raw percentages of those aged 18-plus, approximately 1/6 of tiny Ferry County is American Indian or Alaska Native (AIAN) ... Rossi has almost 58% of the vote there.  Okanogan County (59% Rossi) is about 10% AIAN.  Stevens County is about 5% AIAN and gave Rossi 62% of its votes.

Some counties on the Olympic Peninsula have fairly large AIAN populations and are either Democratic or break-even, but the state is nothing like, say, South Dakota in its Native American voting patterns.

    •  Weren't the tribe a reason Gorton lost? (none)
      •  It was personal (none)
With Gorton it was personal. He fought tribal fishing rights tooth and nail when he was the state's attorney general.  The tribes put lots of money into Maria Cantwell's successful Senate campaign.  The tribes also helped unseat Gorton the first time when they put considerable support into Brock Adam's successful Senate campaign in the late 80s.
