  •  Young Republicans are Libertarians (6+ / 0-)

Currently, the Republican party brand is extremely tarnished among younger conservative voters.  They hate Obama but they don't want to label themselves Republicans, and in the meantime the Libertarian brand has built-in appeal (smoking pot, having sex, etc).  So the 18-25 year old conservatives are labeling themselves as Libertarians or independents rather than Republicans.

Still, do you have any evidence from polls to support your claim that libertarianism is a popular label among the young?

At my kids' high school, one is either a Democrat or a Libertarian.  It's a brave soul who who openly labels himself a Republican.

Disclosure: I'm in suburban California, where our Republicans (of all ages) tend to be of the tax-hating libertarian species rather than the social conservative species.  I can't count how many people of all ages have told me "I'm liberal on social issues and fiscally conservative."  (they're usually registered Republican or independent.)  That's one reason why I think you might be right on Libertarians becoming the next party, IF they can find better standard-bearers than Paul and Barr.
