    The religious right has always been able to make more noise and sound bigger than they are.  The problem we have in America is that the religious right became the organizing base for the Republican Party.  Up through 2006, the American people who were traditionally Republican or leaned Republican voted for the brand.  They weren't voting for right wing extremism except that the religious right controlled the Party through the primaries.  Thus extremists took over the GOP.  

    The 'brand' has been tarnished and now is identified with gun toting, undereducated, white male, gun nut religious right extremists. Now, however conservatives and moderates have caught on and in many instances are abandoning the Party.

    Those traditional conservatives and moderates aren't necessarily anti-gay.  Look at Cheney as an example.  He's about as conservative as you get but he's for gay marriage.

      are peeling off, though.

      And even the old guard has realized that they've been used by the Elephants for decades now.  They can't count on that for much longer.
