  •  My interest is population numbers. (0+ / 0-)

And has been since I was bitten by the zero population bug in the 60s. I know you covered one aspect of that in your diary, but your data does show current population doubling times of about 46 years for the world and about 77 years for the U.S.

I thought this country had too many people in it 40 years ago, and the same for the world. So I had less than a replacement number of children (2- it would have been zero but for my wife's change of heart and it would have been 1 but for the phenomenon of twins).

If NumbersUSA can help me communicate in a timely fashion with my senators and congressman on one aspect of population growth in this country, immigration, I will use its facilities. I don't care where immigrants come from (and many come from directions other than south), in my opinion too many are coming.

Moderation in most things. Except Reactors. IFR forever!

    •  I appreciate your answer but (0+ / 0-)
      1. The way immigrants affect the environment and natural resources availability is through their access to technology. If NumbersUSA were honest about its reasons, they would address environment-friendly technologies, education and fertility rates much more than illegal immigration, 5% of the population but to which they dedicate almost their entire Web site.
      1. Population growth rates adjust to economical and other conditions as you can see in the graphics. You can, as I propose in the article, a more decided enforcement of environmental regulations and improve the existent ones and you will introduce a parameter that will affect population (and immigration, indirectly) much more effectively. Of course, you have to take into account that we are in an open economy that adjusts more easily on quatities than on prices so your environmental regulation does not have undesirable by-products in other fields. At the end, clean technologies are the most important factor to conciliate population and environment.
      1. Your intentions may be honest buy NumbersUSA aren't. Fortunately we have Daily Kos to engage in this debate so we can propose better alternatives.
      1. Thanks for your answer
