  •  The concept of protecting one's enemies (5+ / 0-)

appears to work better for Obama in foreign policy than for health care reform.

The private insurers are the enemy of health care reform.  While they exist and keep skimming profit off of our health care dollars, we will never be able to afford health care for everyone.  To gain true reform, we will have to kill them.  They know this and will put everything into the fight for survival.

they have to be changed. And they WILL be changed, whether they like it or not.

no matter what the SCOTUS ruled in the 19th century. The people running the insurance companies and HMO's would be the "enemy" in need of "protection" whereas many of these corporations have, in effect, sociopathic business models and need to shrivel and disappear.

Yes the health care industries will protect their profitable system. What we must do is find a way to not just come at them all guns blazing - because that justifies their hunkering down and fighting to the end. It seems a much better tactic is to invite them to come along with us towards a system that works smoothly, efficiently, and cost-effectively.

How can they publicly argue they're not in favor of those things?

The WORKERS in all those companies want to keep their jobs - and many of them could
The SHAREHOLDERS in all those companies want to make money - surely a vastly more efficient system would make some people real money, so the companies should be competing to be the providers of the solutions we need, rather than the mess we have now.
The EXECUTIVES who've been running things so badly? - yeah, they're probably toast.
