    I'd suggest that we are rarely in the role of Uke - with exceptions like Pearl Harbor and 9/11, or less dramatically when Europe refused to import our beef during Mad Cow mania - when THEY are doing something to US that is not in direct response to something we've done.

    I'd say in Iraq and Afghanistan we were, under Bush, a 4th kyu nage with uncooperative yudansha as uke. Now we're acting like a 6th dan, and it makes a difference. ;-)

    as for my writings, the columns I wrote for Aikido Today Magazine a few years ago are here. Probably the most relevant essay is "The Moral Equivalent of War", but you might also like the essay on character, and this one about 9/11. I wrote in response to Lance Morrow's Time Magazine essay on 9/12 called "the Case for  Rage".
