We just got a Malibu hybrid, thanks to my GM-employed uncle.  It actually wasn't my first choice (I like Hondas and Toyotas), but I really wanted to help him out.  I didn't even realize at the time that I was sticking it to Rush and Hugh.  Awesome!

My 2000 Saturn (which I luurve) is gradually approaching the end of its useful days and I want to buy a hybrid to replace it.  I have borrowed a friend's Prius and gotten ~52-54 mpg mostly highway w/ it.  My driving patterns have changed since then, but how does the hybrid Malibu compare?  (As a point of comparison, I get ~33mpg w/ my Saturn.)

Also, what is the hybrid technology on the Malibu?  Electric/gas combo over the full speed range like the Prius, or like the Hondas that are all-electric below a certain speed and gas-powered at higher speeds?

And fwiw, I think GM should have shed Pontiac and kept Saturn.  I've owned both, and my Pontiac Sunbird was a POS compared to the Saturn.  Blew a spark plug out of the engine block on the highway at ~125k miles, and the aft end of the exhaust system failed at ~128k miles en route to the dealership to trade it in for the Saturn.

I haven't managed to get it from its current home in Maryland to my house in Texas yet, so I don't know.

What I do know is that it is perhaps the least fuel efficient hybrid out there, getting just a little better mileage than the regular Malibu.  But I got it at a huge discount, so I'll be happy with whatever it does.
