  •  every disabled person I know but one (5+ / 0-)

was turned down at first application (the exception was blind from birth and developmentally disabled).
Every advocate I have ever worked with or spoken with has said to expect this.
And every recipient I know has lost their benefits at least once due to paperwork problems, not understanding the rules, missing a deadline etc.

In my own experience with my son, it took a year and two appeals but eventually he did get SSI and more importantly health insurance as by then we had lost ours and with a pre-existing condition he was now uninsurable for any new company.

I'm glad your office is full of good eggs, I know they're out there. But I have also encountered some incompetent, nasty, suspicious people in the Social Security office. I DO hope this has changed, it's been a long time (8 years) since I've had to deal with it.
