  •  Canadians get twice as many transplants as US (3+ / 0-)

(data from 1997) for kidneys.  There is suspicion that this is because there is more money in dialysis than in transplants, but that's hard to prove.

      Dialysis at a for-profit clinic:
$35,000/month for in-center (or more - we do read our EOBs and compare them)
      $750/day for PD
      $350/week for nephrologist

Total charged private insurance for in-center patient: $438,200 annually
Total charged private insurance for PD patient: $291,950 annually

Transplant: $350,000 (let's boost the cost by $100,000 over 2007 rates)
      Anti-rejection medications: $20,000 annually

      There's the money for you.

Plus I suspect more Canadians donate per capita. The national health program may automatically influence the users' mindset so that they are more concerned with their fellow humans' wellbeing than the U.S. population as a whole is. And they may not have to opt in on their drivers licenses. I need to ask. This is another reason for opt-out rather than opt-in!

This is YOUR Medicare dollars at work, too, folks. While clinics can't charge Medicare nearly what they do private insurance, they're still charging Medicare large sums every month for every dialysis patient who has Medicare as primary. WE are paying for it. More transplants = less Medicare $$$ spent on dialysis, better outcome for more patients, etc., but not only do we have to have the will to cover it, but the kidneys have to be there.

And while we're at it, how about we agree to cover other transplants as well? Why shouldn't a poor person get a liver transplant, or a lung, or a heart?

Want to be a living kidney donor? I need one from someone with a bloodtype of B or O. Drop a note at
