    and I may have mentioned this before: but on the subject of character, I think characters should drive the plot.

    The clearest example of this I've come across was in Sherwood by Parke Godwin.  It's a retelling of Robin Hood set a year after the Battle of Hastings.  What Robin Hood does is right by his ethos; what the Sheriff of Nottingham does is right by his ethos: the problem is that the two crucial characters come from two entirely different cultures, and what seems right to one is wrong to the other.

    If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it, just for a story of character and conflict.
