in this diary.  Homophobia, along with racism and sexism, begins at home and is hugely reinforced at school.  Even kids from progressive homes can be swayed by the hate-filled junk they hear on the playground.

Both my daughters attended a very progressive, liberal private school on L.A's. Westside in the 1990's.   This school has an active gay-lesbian advocacy group, has held conferences on gay awareness, and has many gay faculty and administrators who are comfortably out of the closet, as well as a few brave gay students.  But even with all this effort, you still would hear expressions like "That's so gay" or "He's a total fag" in places where students gathered.  Once, an on-campus art show honoring Gay Pride Week was defaced with hate-filled graffiti (the students used the graffiti as the basis for a followup art exhibit).

This just proves how very hard it is to root these attitudes out, even when people of good will are trying hard to do so.  I like to hope that in most places in the U.S.,  gay slurs will someday be as unacceptable as racial slurs were several decades ago.
