I'm sorry to say. And sorry to see it's been recc'd. I'm ethnically Jewish and an atheist. There are thousands of others like me, who don't believe in the religion yet are ethnically Jewish. Are you denying the validity of their ethnicity?

of articles that describe some Jewish celebrity as having been "born to Jewish parents," instead of simply calling the person Jewish. The concept of Jewish ethnicity is increasingly seen to be un-PC.

that the same word means (at least) two different things. It's an ethnicity and a religion... the two often go together, but often not, and the lack of intersection will only increase as time goes on. If someone asks me if I'm Jewish, I say, "Yes, ethnically".

it's also tangled up together. Judaism itself has viewed Jews partly in terms of ancestry, and the social status of Jews throughout history as well as the doctrines of anti-Semitism have often blended religion and race/ethnicity into one big lump.

you can't tell where Italian ends and Catholic begins.  The difference, I guess, is that there are also Irish Catholics, but there are no other ethnic groups with the Jewish religion, at least not with large populations in the United States.  If we were more familiar with, say, Ethiopian Jewish people, that might be different.
