    In my diary, I took for granted that I was dealing with the social, not biological, aspects of race, but many of the commenters see it as a biological question.

      is the assumption that there's some kind of biological underpinning to racial categories.

      And honestly, I have to tell you that health care providers are unlikely to encounter sickle cell anemia in people who look "White" and unlikely to encounter Tay-Sachs disease in people who look (American version) "Black."

      So while I don't want to reify racial categories as biological categories like genus and species, I also don't want to completely disregard the relevance of shared ancestry and social perception of biological underpinning.
