  •  No, it's not - totally agree (0+ / 0-)

But I think we give it too much emphasis. And people who DO emphasize it usually have a larger political agenda one way or the other.

But consider the question posed in this diary: 'Are Jews 'black' or 'white'?

What does that question even mean? One is literally asking are these humans humans or humans? How does one answer that? It's like asking whether water is made up of Hydrogen or Oxygen.

The answer, whatever the hell it may be, may play some role in providing a social-scientific, academic explanation of the ease or lack therein of Jewish integration into the 'accepted mainstream' American life but, really, doesn't the question itself reinforce the notion that race is of importance when, most clearly, it shouldn't be?

I'm not saying we shouldn't talk about it - but that the way we talk about it should be changed. Instead of the us-vs-them frame in which it is usually cast, why not discuss it in terms of WE (as a species) are capable of doing that (racism) but WE (as a species) are also equally capable of doing this (ignoring it)? That frame seems more constructive to fostering the type of inter-'tribe' solidarity of the type we need. It suggests that we're all sinners on this subject - but we can all be saints too.

    •  Well, as I pointed out in the diary itself (2+ / 0-)

I do consider the question silly on the face of it, and I think it demonstrates an ignorance of both the nature and history of Jews, whose identity is largely independent of the racial frame the contemporary West uses.

But it's common for people to assume without thinking about it that Jews are a white people. I see it crop up every now and then, such as a survey that reports, say, "Jews vote Democratic in higher numbers than any other white group."

Little assumptions like that do have an impact on discussions about race, and it's important to root them out and expose them when they do occur.
