ing what is already going on. There is a strong culture of spontaneously organizing, cooperating, and networking in the Middle East and Muslim world generally, so technologies that make it easy for people to communicate and coordinate without need of large centralized structures like broadcasting facilities or organized political parties are bound to have a big effect. That is more true of the wealthier, economically more vibrant and diverse places like Iran and Egypt and the gulf states. Part of what was so surprising about the clerical takeover after the 1979 revolution was that Iran was so cosmopolitan, but even with all the repression the Islamic Republic has always been a far cry from the complete repression of places like Turkmenistan or North Korea.
