    What you're saying is completely reasonable, but I think it highlights how little we know about what's really going on.  Which is why I think we have to be really careful about distinguishing fact from our own speculation.  And I don't mean that term in the pejorative sense of it...we're all speculating here, trying to piece things together and figure out what it all means.  But one could just as reasonably say that the election results are clearly fraudulent, the quick announcement was because they knew that Admadinejad had lost badly, they expected responses like this because they knew that he had lost badly, and are now playing for time to let the steam blow off.

    But I hope you're right.

      rather they've just added another cord of wood to the fire.
      The government is flailing here, and the protesters have to be encouraged by their confused response. The investigation-- no matter how fraudulent will only add to  the questions. And that will add more pressure for a new election-- or for the clerics to give up power.
