    His point is valid.

You're picking nits and you know it.

in lecture mode of late making broad sweeping statements.  But I am curious as to just where he's seeing people comparing health care issues to slavery.

If I wanted to pick nits, I'd point out that Obama's ancestors, for instance, don't share his fundamental issue, not having been slaves.  While the great majority of black Americans share that, not all do.

I dunno, I don't really have much of a point.

Just grumpy at the number of people who are so happy of late to pigeonhole people and lump them into disparate groups they can then feel morally superior to.  Hokey as it is, I was kinda hoping we were finally getting to be more of a 'Kumbaya, people are people' society, rather than continuing on in the side A vs side B mode, especially now that Republicans are imploding.  Back to sniping at each other, I guess.

          •  You don't need to back track (0+ / 0-)

As I understood your comments, this diary just brings up another issue that does not do anything but divide us.  The diarist doesn't provide anything that suggests that there is a problem that needs to be addressed, much less that his rant is the way to solve it.

If there were a smite button, I'd push it.

pretending that the enslavement of blacks in America isn't an issue worth discussing.  Or pretending that all bad, unjust things are akin to slavery.  They're not.  That's the diarist's point.  He's not claiming that other forms of slavery didn't or don't exist.  He's saying that using slavery as an analogy for things that aren't slavery is wrong.  And I agree.

              •  "Wrong" in what sense? (0+ / 0-)

First, the diarist didn't explain why this issue needs to be addressed.  From a link someone else provided, he was upset with a single comment.  And the person who made the comment apologized.  So, I question the point to the rant.

Second, and maybe more importantly, it's a bit silly to try to shut down the use of all future analogies in any discussion.  Which is about what the diarist is demanding.  He may as well demand that people stop using the letter "p" (to pick one randomly).

it really is like the folks constantly screaming 'Godwin'.  You're allowed to use rhetoric except in the specific way that they have predetermined to be off-limits, and any reference to thereof is immediately labeled crackpot.

Extrapolation and comparison have been valid in arguments since Greek and Roman orators, but suddenly we're circumscribed in comparing 'X' to 'Y' in any form, unless 'X' was EXACTLY as horrific as 'Y' because those who feel they have some connection to 'Y' feel slighted.

It is a 'war on rhetoric'.

it's because he's talking about something that offends black people, plain and simple.
You're not going to get anywhere on Kos talking about that.
As you can see, any mention of racism against blacks, or issues pertinent to the black community, is met with unnecessary defenses, conflations, and false equivalencies, almost better to just not mention it altogether.

Everything you do is a balloon.
