Generally, in most, but not all previous examples, slaves were the lowest of low classes, but were enslaved due to loss in a battle or unpaid debts, and were often released at the end of a term or at least treated with the understanding that they were humans capable of the same feelings as the humans who enslaved them. Even in the most of the worse cases, slaves we just a permanent bottom class. Families usually could remain intact, for example. The working conditions were horrible and often deadly. The food was bad. Life was hell, but it was human hell.

The slave trade that developed in the new world with imported African slaves was very different. It essentially treated the slaves more like livestock than a sub-peasant class or a group of prisoners.
