  •  Oh, thanks for the tip on John Kallas. (4+ / 0-)

I will check him out as I lived in Portland up until last October.  I am currently in Medford which is right by Ashland (Oregon Shakespeare Festival territory;) and almost at the border w/ California.  We are in a "bowl" here so it tends to be pretty temperate like Portland but I am learning that it is a lot sunnier down here.  I do want to get back to Portland eventually but might as well explore while I'm here.  I will post w/my thoughts reviews etc. as I read through what I've got.  I'm orignally from Maine so I recognize a lot of what you write about.  Now I'm relearning stuff as well as learning about the NW stuff.  I'm happy to continue to post what I learn for others.

      sunnier than Portland? :)

Good luck with the books and make sure you check at least 3 trustworthy photo sources before actually eating anything.

      •  Hah! Well, Seattle technically has Portland beat (4+ / 0-)

for rainiest but I've never lived there so I cannot confirm;)

And yes, thank you for the cautionary statement as while I find historical info on medicinal uses very interesting I would caution anyone before using foraged herb/spice/etc to verify thoroughly and consult with the proper professional.  Plus right now a lot of the plants I see that I can identify are growing along roadsides where I would not want to eat due to exposure to exhaust fumes and possible lead contamination.
