Iran developed their system from a variety of factors, and we had our hand in some of that.

Ask yourself this--how many elected officials in the US are publicly admitted atheists?

    •  Pete Stark is the only one in the House, but (0+ / 0-)

there are multiple members of 3 different non-Christian religions, and there are a bunch of "no answer" types that aren't explicitly atheist.

      •  Right, its not too common, (5+ / 0-)

in Iranian society, much like heavily catholic societies the clergy play an integral role in society.

Our placement of the Shah in power put us behind a power that marginalized religious power in Iran, when the revolution came the blowback that came from the Clergy and is was only slightly less anti-US as it was anti-Shah.

How do you propose we correct that situation? I know that the more we demand things from Iran, the more we condemn, the more we entrench reactionary power. I think it is high time we tried a new approach regardless of who is in power.

its not entirely silly. The US needs to be real careful about pronouncements. So far, I think Obama has been spot on, but we can be pretty annoyingly self-righteous.

I was and am a complete Mousavi partisan, but there are things going on here that are difficult to get good answers for. I don't know what the protesters should do in Iran. You want make a statement and you want to resist, but you do have to consider the practicality of it all. I do not want the Reform movement to be crushed or outmaneuvered.
