    The problem is not with the concept of rating, which is used successfully in other online comunities. The problem is with poor implementation of a rating system, in this case one which lends itself to abuse.

    Ratings and reputation systems can work very well, if they are implemented correctly. In most cases, the most successful ones are ones that were developed iteratively, with continuously solicited feedback from the community and sometimes actual design discussion participation by the whole community.

    Grabbing Scoop and just enabling a ratings system without understanding online community or social network systems does not mean that rating systems don't work or are not a valuable tool for community self-moderation.
