    One hates to think what might have made it purple. Probably not geochemical in origin, I'm thinking.  That ugly stuff that drains off mines.

    That lovely turquoise of tropical oceans is quite frightening when flowing in a temperate river.  But purple?  Yikes!

      ...to the article or one like it, but haven't been able to put a concerted effort into it, and my scattershot approach hasn't turned up anything yet.  It was probably in a Newsweek sometime in the mid-to-late nineties, and it's possible I have my colors wrong or confused it with other pollution in another location, but in the India example I do recall it was several chemical companies operating there.  I'll keep looking  -- now I've got my own curiousity up.
