A drug used for arthritis can reverse the symptoms of Alzheimer's "in minutes". It appears to tackle one of the main features of the disease - inflammation in the brain. Enbrel is injected into the spine where it blocks a chemical responsible for damaging the brain and other organs.

A pilot study carried out by U.S. researchers found one patient had his symptoms reversed "in minutes"....:)

      I love science. :) link

This new study highlights the importance of certain soluble proteins, called cytokines, in Alzheimer’s disease. The study focuses on one of these cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF), a critical component of the brain’s immune system. Normally, TNF finely regulates the transmission of neural impulses in the brain. The authors hypothesized that elevated levels of TNF in Alzheimer’s disease interfere with this regulation. To reduce elevated TNF, the authors gave patients an injection of an anti-TNF therapeutic called etanercept. Excess TNF-alpha has been documented in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with Alzheimer’s.

      •  That is the thing, I do not have AD, but what I (2+ / 0-)

have is due to SLE. So certain drugs for AD (depending on their mechanism of action) would not do anything for me (like Namenda) and others (like Razyden, Aricept, etc.) can work on parts of it.

        Another reason to love lupus...

how many of the drugs that are being developed/used off label, etc for AZ are going to be effective for so many conditions that are causing congitive dysfunction.... I mean there is really nobody doing any other research in this area except for AZ right now ... all of the drugs they are prescribing for mental problems are in point of fact WORSENING over time cognitive functioning. I hold out great hope for this new drug which by-passed the neuro-transmittors themselves and thus alleviates not only the horrid side effects but also the cognitive declines. and of course the helmet. hope you looked at my bz post on lamictal.... I am definitely going to do some more looking into lupus and alternatives however and when i find anything will let you know directly. know that my best thoughts are with you as is my hope that we will find an answer, somewhere...

          •  HUGS, and thank you. As I work where I do I am (0+ / 0-)

lucky enough to have co-worker/friends also keeping an eye on the drug pipeline news too for AD specific meds and related off-label meds. My main hope pins on how well I tolerate and then am helped by cytoxan.

            •  prayers and hugs to you (1+ / 0-)

i know so well the almost crippling fear about being able to tolerate these drugs ... and hey, I and all my quantum physics junkie groupies are gonna put you on our healing list and  toy around with the intricate invisible energy fields in your personal field to ensure things go well.... remote healing sent your way from out here in CA... Oh, and if you haven't yet ad ive probably said this before, get the Lynne McTaggert cd on The Field and listen to that... It's just that fabulous and really puts things into perspective.... no matter how damn shitty current circumstances are. truly can find hope through this work... Quantum physics is what saves my mind when i am wavering...
