  •  My life has bumped up againt these issues. (0+ / 0-)

I was born in post-war Japan to missionaries who had answered McArthur's call to come and evangelize the defeated.  Not unlike the Spanish sending priests with their troops to the new world.  It is an old tradition.

When I was 11 we moved to Okinawa--my father was invited by the military congregation of the church of christ there to start an outreach to the "natives".  They offered to pay for me and my siblings to attend the DOD schools. (It amounted to $2400 per child per year.)  It was an attractive offer to my parents who felt their homeschooling abilities were about to hit a wall as the children got older and they did not want to send us to boarding school.  Once again, you could say representatives of the military was pushing the christian god option.  Many of the church's members held high rank.

You will find independent congregations of christians renting buildings outside most of our foreign bases.  There is no supervision of such that I am aware of.  It is most prevalent among fundamental, evangelical sects who by their nature set themselves apart from the rest of us sinners.
