Limelite, Casual Wednesday both Senate & House Committees, I am struck by how much committee hearings, especially on a subject of public interest, are played for the camera.

If introductory statements by each committee member were abolished and they got right down to business, I'm guessing it would save a shitload of time. Can't estimate more specifically than that.

Also, about half the questions, regardless of who's asking, are in this form: "As my constituents know, I have for years been saying that the real problem is.... blah blah blah, and in 1992 I released a report blah blah blah, and in in 2003 I wrote to then the Secretary and said blah blah blah. and so my question Mr./Madam Secretary/Ambassador/General is: don't you agree with me?"

This is not what I thought I'd be when I grew up.

That does get annoying. The committee members are supposed to be there to hear from the witnesses, not hear themselves talk. The men and women complain that there is never enough time for hearings, but they themselves drone on ad nauseum.

Of course, there is always the follow up press release to the newspapers back home bragging about asking that question.

I don't know what the answer is, but witnesses should be talking more and members be talking less. They are the ones who always have a media mouthpeice. The witnesses often (but not always) have little or no access to the media to make their points to the public.

"you are thusly a pro forma socialist; whether you like it or not. logic dictates this"

...all the committee members are there, and each one with a staff member behind them, and all the lobbyists, and the lobbyists who are there only because the other side's lobbyist is there.....

I just calculate hoe much time & energy & money is spent for every hour of that posturing.

There oughta be a law. Or something.
