I'm a birder, and have observed that many birders zoom around looking for target birds.  (Some people actually see it as a competitive activity, and if you see more species, you're "better" somehow.)

I've had some of my best experiences by stopping, sitting down, and being quiet.  After awhile, the local creatures kinda forget you're there.  They'll get back to what they were doing before you tramped into the neighborhood and disturbed them.  Which, ultimately, can be very interesting.

Plus it has a wonderful meditative aspect:  You quiet the mind and open the senses.  And take in so much more in the process.  Very refreshing and invigorating, too.  Balm for the spirit, and all that.
