  •  The same group was working with locals in (4+ / 0-)

the surrounding communities to help curb the trade.  Poachers will cut down nest trees to get at the chicks - often killing them in the process and always destroying the tree.  There was a two pronged program - make the local residents (mostly small farmers) aware of the money that was coming into the community from visitors who come to see the birds, and give them direct economic support for nests on their property.  If someone found a nest tree on their property, they'd be paid $25 for pointing it out (appproximately what they'd earn for cutting down the tree), then $25 for each chick that fledged from the nest.  So they had an incentive for making sure the nest succeeded, and that the tree remained safe year after year.

They only call it Class War when we fight back.
