    answers you didn't fully understand (and I'll look over the puzzle later to see if any other answers need additional explanation).

    1-D WHAT.  For both 1-D in this puzzle, and 2-A in the cryptic, I needed to find good clues for WHAT which wouldn't be too obvious. Not an easy task, at least not in my current fuzz-brained state, so I went to and on-line dictionary and thesaurus to look over the possibilities.  

    One meaning of what is how much (as in What's the cost?) and I used that in the cryptic.  Another meaning -- common in the UK, but used here in the US as well -- is don't you think so? (as in Interesting item at Wonkette about Palin this week, what?)

    5-D, HO.  Those who played with toy trains as kids may remember that one of the most popular scales for such train sets is HO.  (Indeed, according to Wikipedia it is the most popular scale.)

    And while I'm here: even though you didn't ask, perhaps I should explain that the clue for 11-A ATARI is a reference to the once-ubiquitous Atari ads which asked "Have you played Atari today?"
