    How involved were you in the actual design and layout? I'm just trying to get a sense of how much of what little I've seen was your own ideas... because it sure looks (and sounds) great from here.

      The design was totally custom and we were involved in every decision.  It had to be designed to fit on a rather constrained piece of land.  Our property is steep and, although we have 6 acres, we wanted to minimize the impact.  We kept the footprint and construction zone very small.

      We worked with a very creative designer.  One of our requirements was having everything one really needs on one floor so that as we get older, we won't have lots of climbing to do.  We do have an attic office and a walkout basement because of the slope of the land.  One interesting idea the designer came up with to get natural light into the stairwell to the basement was putting glass blocks in the landing of the upper stairwell that goes to the attic to allow light to filter through from the stairwell skylights.
