but what Obama doesn't understand is that many, many military officers are really upset at abuses like this. In the last year, I met a Marine JAG officer - a full colonel - who voted democratic for the first time in his life because he couldn't stomach mistreatment of prisoners, torture, erosion of habeas corpus.  I met another JAG just a few weeks ago who has been totally radicalized by abuses like this - a former conservative who voted for Obama and almost tears up when he talks about his outrage over torture.  These guys are hardly alone.  All during the Bush administration there have been normally conservative persons who have stood up and raised objections, resigned, expressed their outrage, refused to do this work.

So what the hell is Obama waiting for?  Maybe it's just focus as you say - he has other things to do, and the abuses are systems problems divorced from real lives, that can be fixed later.

But if he's not moving because he's worried about the loyalty or worse, the approval, of the military, then he should reconsider.  These guys are going to start to get disgusted at him too if he doesn't start cleaning up some of these horrible abuses.
