    "Taxi to the Dark Side" in by HBO's documentary offerings recently.
    That, and feature stories like M. Jawad's, have to make one pause and think about how the use and application of American force abroad can be as thoughtless, ill-considered and counter-productive as it was 108 years ago.

    What purpose was served by generations of Ivy League and earnestly better schools of History, Politics, International Relations, Regional Studies, as well as the general advances in communications, racial equity, ethics and exchanges of students?

    Apparently none.  You had to be a jingoist doofus to embrace the imperial pretensions of 1900 America.
    It seems the same criteria apply today.

    I used to teach about the growth of the age of anxiety in western culture before the Great War, 1914-1918.  A wave of doubt that sprang up in that era that "Progress" derived from rational, empirical, and informed decision making was a false god.  And surely the Great War itself drove the point home for good.

    America, your technology and your information based culture will as completely complicit in your demise as "state-planning" was in the Soviet demise.  I am not at all cheered by the prospect.  

    Wehrmacht troops were capable of handing out candy and smiling too. When you are on a brute's mission you will, inevitably, be the brute.
