  •  Yet in August, 2001, (7+ / 0-)

the US government was dealing with the Taliban in negotiation on an oil/gas agreement being pushed by Ken Lay and Enron. It certainly was legitimate enough for Dick Cheney at that time.
In fact, it was this policy that led to the resignation of John O'Neill from the FBI. He claimed that the Bush administration was putting the fight against terrorism and bin Laden on hold while Enron pushed for the oil agreement. Corporate interests won out and the collusion of Saudi Arabia and bin Laden was covered up. In facr, I think it is this information that was involved in the 26 pages of the 9/11 Commission that concerned Saudi Arabia that was redacted and has never been disclosed.
It is also the reason that the Obama administration continued to fight for "sovereign immunity" on behalf of the Saudi government right up to yesterday's Supreme Court decision on the suit being bought by 9/11 families.
