PV production is already a multinational industry with certian OEMs in a leadership position now defending their market share against new companies/new technologies, and the ones that consistently execute well or innovate will lead while others focus on niche markets or migrate toward an ODM "Foundery" model of supplying cells/panels to down-stream OEMs.

There are a number of well established PV fabs in the world and just to frame the picture, Sharp Kameyama Plant is probably the most advanced and they are building a new PV manufacturing base Sharp Sakai City opening next year included in this Solar Primer.

Several US inovators such as First Solar and Suntec are forming JVs in various countries which is an equally viable approach for companies without the capital of huge OEMs such as Sharp.

The nature of Solar is distributed generation and the industry will develop likewise to serve regional markets.

PV production itself is highly automated and most of the backend processes are addaptable to automated or labor based processes depending on the product technology and economics.

It seems I picked the wrong link form my archive.  Sharp solar should not be Kameyama Plant as I stated/linked (that is LCD plant) but Katsuragi Plant, howver, my old link for this plant is dead and now it seems the Solar Homepage JP in Japanese only but with a link to this Solar World EN page.

Regretably it does not show the plant but has other information.

Current Sharp PV production is 2Gw.
