    There's two schools of thought (at least in Christianity), which are more or less tied into the particular choice of politics that the religious group tends to agree with.

    The conservative viewpoint says that since the end times are just around the corner, it's a lost cause to try to save the Earth.

    The liberal viewpoint is that because the Earth is God's creation, we should work to protect it.  There's also the "life" issue, in that to protect human life we should be making sure that people aren't drinking or breathing things that could make them die or get sick from disease.

      I was brought up in an older protestant tradition, one that held waste and profligacy to be the work of the devil.  In that sense you are right, we viewed the earth and it's abundance as a gift from god and wasting any of it would be way up there in the catalog of mortal sins.
