    Hands down.  Popularized jazz and the blues, practically invented the improvisational solo.

    Dylan is #2, or will be when he qualifies for this poll by dying (a long time away, I hope).

    There's a ton of others to consider (Carter Family, Jimmy Rodgers, Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Hank Williams, Ellington, Charlie Parker, Coltrane); American music in the twentieth-century is an incredible treasure chest and those names just scratch the surface.

    But Satchmo and Dylan tower above the rest.  They were the two truly transformative figures.
