  •  Appalachia is in 10 states (0+ / 0-)

when his father visited Appalachia, 46,000 people earned their living by coal mining, but now that figure is fewer than 11,000, less than are employed in the Walmarts within the state.

    Emphasis mine.

Appalachia comprises parts of 10 states: Alabama, Georgia, South and North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.

I suspect the reference is to West Virginia. If so, why do some people only think of WV in terms of Appalachia?
