that this book is causing a major bit of squabbling between hard-core atheist science-types who want little to do with religious folk who also accept scientific ideas to a varying degree and those who advocate a more toned-down approach to dealing with the same group.

I'm not saying the "accomodationists" are entirely correct here.  They do sometimes come across as apologists for religion, but it seems to me that the stridency of the "new atheists" can make religious moderates so defensive that they won't listen to their arguments.

that the Texas Board of Education voted on a challenge to evolution in March 2009. Link here  The chairman of the board at the time was Dr. McLeroy who believes God created the earth less than 10,000 years ago.  I think the only response to this level of lunacy is to be strident against people like Dr. McLeroy.  To cooperate and show respect for the ideas of a McLeroy is a terrible response to someone in power who can do damage to the education of children.  Religious moderates objecting to McLeroy being called an idiot because he is a fellow Christian need to be asked to defend his ideas about creation.  It is not his being a Christian that is the problem.  It is that his ideas are lunacy and he is in a position to implement lunatic policies.  We will not be helping religious moderates or science to be complacent and respectful to the McLeroyes of this world.

I don't see why we should accomdate any religion if we're going to have a discussion about rationality and science. Let me be clear,  I do think it should be legally tolerated and so forth. Religion is the antithesis of rationality and demonstrating it's fallacy is the first step in moving this nation forward.

You don't make people less extreme by refusing to talk with them...
