    Wiretaps don't take an AG certification. The hospital affair must have been for NSA running a sweep through ALL call records from paticipating telcos. "Pen registers,' the technically obsolete but legally still current term for a system that collects the who called whom when data, require a 6 month certification, but not a warrant, when used domestically.

    Practicing Law without a License is my 3d favorite Crime.

      the information (data or voice) is collected in real time.

      Do you really think that they went to all this trouble to merely collect "who called whom/when data?"  That's not even correct because that type of data only identifies the hardware and not the person.

      They were getting everything going over the trunk lines in real time.  Then they merely pulled out the data on the pre-selected targets.
