don't take this badly either -- it's because you have a specific history of being excluded on the outside.  You know how much it hurts.  At a lesser level than you, so do I.  But in the absence of such exclusion and pain being inflicted upon you, you might be no better than the people who now persecute you.  Your pain and exclusion has informed you.  And me.

It is pleasant to be accepted and to be part of the "in" group -- there's no denying it.  And tribalism and wanting to be part of something is a powerful, powerful force.  It leads to wars and hatred and ethnic cleansing - the worst horrors of humanity -- but it also leads to GOOD things.  A sense of belonging.  A sense of common destiny.

I am drawn back to the "interesting mix" quote of Contact.  I have often pondered this myself.  It is this (what we're discussing, here, pardon my incoherence) that's at least partly at the core of that "interesting mix".

What we as a species have to do is draw people in to that sense of common humanity, belonging and common destiny, without unduly trammeling individual freedom and liberty.  It will be difficult, I think .. perhaps the signature struggle of the species for all time.
