    That is a spectacular number considering the Dems of the time only had 44 seats. And to go from a 100-seat majority to 0 is a real implosion. Amazing numbers.

      That's the succession crisis you're looking at, with all but 3 seats in Virginia leaving Congress.

      The interesting thing isn't that the Democrats drop a lot; the interesting things is that the GOP actually fell a bit between the 1858 and the 1860 elections.
