  •  Ha! (0+ / 0-)

In my mind, Obama isn't even a liberal president, much less a progressive one. Furthermore, point, please, to the place where I said Obama was a failure. (Hint: You won't find one.)

I work in research administration, bub. My working life is all about demanding standards and short timetables--mostly set by the federal government, since that's where most of my faculty get their money. But if Obama gets to the end of his first term and has made substantive progress on gay rights issues, we're fine. What troubles me and most of the rest of the LGBT community is not that he hasn't gotten anything done yet--it's that he hasn't even started trying to get anything done yet, despite having assured us time and again that he's on our side and a "fierce advocate" on gay rights issues. To which my response is that if this is what a fierce advocate looks like, we're seriously fucked.

    •  Well, which is it that he "hasn't even started (0+ / 0-)

trying" or that he has "assured us time and time again that he's on our side?"  Do you think that you are the only ones who got this message and what else do you expect him to do...after all he is not Congress and not the Court and, in case you haven't noticed, this guy is not the politically orgasmic type?
If you want emoting over ANYTHING, you voted for the wrong guy in November.  I would think that after 8 years of Bush Cowboy "bring'm on" hysterics you might want a more adult approach to things....but then maybe not.  George is sort of endearing in his own sort of way.  ;-)

      •  You really ought to work on your reading (0+ / 0-)

        comprehension skills, you know?

Obama, like virtually every other Democratic politician throughout my adult life, used the gay community for money and support, made us a lot of airy promises, and hasn't even started trying to make an effort to get around to starting to work toward fulfilling them. As a cursory check of my diary history at this site would show, I expected nothing different from him. He was all talk, no action when he was in the Illinois legislature, and the Donnie McClurkin foul-up was only the first of many signs that Obama would throw teh ghey under the bus whenever political expediency demanded it. Nevertheless, the gay community rallied behind him. He kept promising us he was a "fierce advocate" for our rights. I knew that wasn't true, and so did at least a few of my more prescient LGBT brothers and sisters.

However, every time anybody even so much as dared think that Obama was not the bestest, most liberal presidential candidate EVAH! (and doubly so when it came to gay rights), folks on this website and all across the intertoobz erupted in righteous indignation. No amount of rubbing their noses in the pertinent facts would suffice to convince them that they were, as you seem to be, drunk on Obama Kool-Aid.

And now, when we in the gay community are doing exactly what Obama told us he wanted us to do--i.e., get in his face when he's doing something wrong--those same people (and you) keep telling us that no, Obama really is this liberal, progressive champion of gay rights--honest! Just give him a little more time.

Well, honey, we don't have any more time to give. So we're going to keep on getting up in Obama's face until he starts living up to the promises he made to us. And we're going to keep on getting up in Congress's face until they start helping him do that. And we're going to keep on getting up in the faces of people like you who tell us we should just be patient and keep quiet and not rock the boat because, after all, it's only been six months. Honey, it's been a hell of a lot longer than six months, and I'll be damned if I'm going to sit down at the back of the bus one more time.

        •  Keeping both feet on the ground. (0+ / 0-)

Well, honey, we don't have any more time to give.

That is fine hyperbole but it not true.  This issue is not resolved and you and I will keep working on it until those in charge get it right.  All this focus on Obama is misplaced.  The President does not make law.  That is Congress' job and you are going to deny support to me, which is what the present Republican Congressman wants you to do, as an act toward repealing DOMA and DADT?

How So we're going to keep on getting up in Obama's face until he starts living up to the promises he made to us.

Obama did not promise to replace Congress!!! And you will not be in his face because he is in a security bubble, but out of frustration yell at me. Help elect me to Congress and you will get to get in my face because I will not live in a security bubble.

And we're going to keep on getting up in Congress's face until they start helping him do that.

Well, fine, but if you think getting in Pete Sessions' "face" is going to change his mind, you don't know Pete.  The only thing that will get Pete Session' attention is VOTES...something you can help me get.  But you will not have to get in my face becausee I am right on this issue...something Pepe will never get right.

And we're going to keep on getting up in the faces of people like you who tell us we should just be patient and keep quiet and not rock the boat because, after all, it's only been six months.

That is not even in the same ballpark from what I am trying to convey to you.

Honey, it's been a hell of a lot longer than six months,

Of couse it has, but has your issue been crying out of justice longer that that of the Native Americans, union members, farm workers...or the poor?  Our nation has a long way to go before it implements the values we claim to uphold.

and I'll be damned if I'm going to sit down at the back of the bus one more time.

Well, unless you are willing to march on Washington with guns drawn and take over the government, you will wait and metaphorically sit in the back of the bus because we are a NATION OF LAWS.  We will all sit in the back of the bus until we get it right.  That day will not be hastened but if each one of us who experiences some level of injustice goes to battle with all the rest.    Elbowing each other to the head of the line will not advance our cause, but will give aid and comfort to those who continue to enjoy the institutional injustice that characterizes all too much of our social policy.
The idea of either "hanging together or hanging separately" is never more true than now and on this issue.

          •  Oh, piss off (0+ / 0-)

Child, I wouldn't vote for you if you were the last person left on earth if this is any example of your views.

            •  Gosh, you really are screwed up. (0+ / 0-)

40-something Zen Catholic liberal anomaly, repeat graduate student, writer, thinker, musician, poet. My drugs of choice are chocolate, red wine, lively conversation, and the printed word

You don't know how old you are, have Lao Tzu and the Pope confused, think graduate courses makes you a liberal and think that blowing your mouth off makes you a thinker.  Son, you need professional help.  Really do...or need to severely cut back on the red wine and that other stuff you are taking that is you SECOND choice.   ;-)
