Please don't think I haven't read Jung.  I have and I have read  his biographies as well...and I won't belabor the point, but he was quite taken with Nazi typology of the warrior, which have become the fuel for neo-Jungian Robert Bly warrior types.

I merely respectfully but deeply disagree with your use of "typology" since the difference between conceptual and phatic is not a difference of types, but we're getting way OT here -- and I'll soon reveal my true identity as professorial and you can pillory me for being one of those tenured radicals who look down on everyone else.

The point is that the Republicans have politicized resentment -- and if Dems insist upon being ONLY reasonable, we/they have hardly a chance in this political conflict...this is a very deplorable state of affairs, but populist outrage at social/economic injustice can and should be ours to work with.

       First, you are spot on.

Second, "You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows."  Sadly, though, for this country, the uncanny ability to ignore the obvious seems to have reached epidemic proportions among the Democratic Party leadership [sic].

Third, I've put up a couple of comments in this thread re:  see, this is exactly how Hitler used language and emotion (or, perhaps, language on emotion) to drive people, and bend people, to his will.  I keep seeing comments in this thread, such as yours, that (to me) corroborate the parallels I think are obvious between Hitler-Goebbels-Gingrich and, now, the entire GOP-U.S.Taliban and their use of language...

Nixon "got" it, too.  Not as an orator, but as an advertiser, to wit:  the "Southern Strategy," which, in essence, did exactly what you wrote - it "politicized resentment."  And it worked like a charm.  Albiet, an evil one.

I'm not sure what you mean by "taken by" but Jung was not a fan of the Nazis. It's unclear how you could read his work and think otherwise.

Also, to clarify, I don't think conceptual and phatic are types. My point was not that they are the same thing as types but that understanding how people interact is important in politics and typology is another tool in this arena.
