    1. Yes, the federal constitution moved away from the hunting rationale. Why? Maybe because they decided that hunting wasn't so special that it needed to be in the Constitution, I suppose. It was there as a rationale in the states: point against the NRA. It didn't carry forward: point for the NRA.
    1. We were 13 states then, uncomfortably sharing closer quarters than the Articles of Confederation. There was no standing federal army. The most clear mission for a Well-Regulated Militia in Massachusetts would have been: defend against Spain, or Canada, or New Hampshire.
    1. If you want to protect against tyranny of the state itself - you sure don't want that militia "well regulated."
