    ...I can't really comprehend the whole Secessionist thing, the whole "we did it before and we'll do it again" trip that people like this trot out. I know that the lasting effects of the Civil War are deeply ingrained into Southern culture at this point. Witness the guy on "Antiques Roadshow" who glows with enthusiasm when appraising Confederate antiques (rifles, uniforms, whatever).

    I guess it's a historic "myth" that appeals to a certain kind of person, like how Westerners (I'm one) buy into the notion of wide-open spaces, rugged individualism, etc., etc.

    Does anybody understand this better than I do? Seriously, I'm asking.
