...in the past 8 years, and it was coming from the people in power.  Now it's coming from some kook who'll probably get creamed on election day.

Do you honestly think that this could somehow lead to Virginia seceding?  A state Obama won by 6 points?  A state that contains the Pentagon and other key pieces of our national security apparatus?  This woman is no threat to anyone except for her own chances of getting elected.

when a candidate for office uses violent rhetoric, they legitimize it.

And that's what stirs up the "lone wolves" that have been going off this year and shooting people.

Strictly speaking, she was staying within the boundaries of protected speech.  The remedy for that kind of speech is more speech, and the way to do it (that's effective with "conservatives") is to identify her with "1960s rabble-rousers and other nuts."

But make no mistake, her kind of crap really does stir up the shooters and bombers.

lead to Virginia seceding. I do think it could lead to, or be a harbinger of, more nuts going off like the one who attacked those people in a Unitarian church. The more people express views like this, the more it validates and encourages others. And, as G2geek pointed out, coming from a candidate for office further legitimizes it.

And, as I said, I do also see the other point, that by speaking out in such a crazy manner they are de-legitimizing themselves and demonstrating to all the sane people just how crazy they are.

So in a way I should be happy to see them shoot themselves in the feet, but, as I said, I just can't shake the disturbing sensation. They give me the willies.

Election went bad. Iran went to hell. Media went to bed. #twitter
