It is pretty much the same, right?  You don't have the right to duplicate it and share with friends.  You don't have the right to play it as a public performance.

Note that the Kindle has a mountable file system.  You can just plug it into any PC or Macintosh and copy the files to your hard drive.

Users who keep backups of their Kindle books can restore the stolen copies of 1984 and Animal Farm and read them as before on a Kindle.

I won't tell anyone that Reagan was a turd.

    •  That's a bit ridiculous, isn't it? (4+ / 0-)

It's not the same at all. When I buy vinyl all I'm expecting is the right to own the record itself. Ditto with the Kindle. If I pay $10 for Animal House, I'm doing so with the expectation that I will own it forever regardless of any screw ups by the company I bought it from.

If it's so easy and legal for users to make backups of the stolen content, why delete it from their machines in the first place?

Sounds like the decision was made without the proper vetting through Amazon's legal department.  Amazon does all of this stuff in India, anyway.  My theory is that someone in Bangalore in charge of overseeing intellectual property usage on the Kindle store just flipped a switch somewhere.
