    And first, back to the Moon to set up a base, from which we can launch to the rest of the solar system.
    If we find life on Mars, different story, but we needn't go anywhere until we find life with our robots first. The machines will just get better and better, the natural extension of our senses.

    •  Why go back down a gravity well before we (0+ / 0-)

      need to? Most of what we will do in the solar system is out side of the surface of planets. We need more space habitat practice, not planet or ever Moon bound practice.

        But there is a lot to learn about space living on the Moon, as an intermediate step to getting large space stations that can hold say a hundred people, and do building and science.
        but I think the moon is possible in incremental steps.

        •  It is a heck of a long way away and it does not (0+ / 0-)

          have a lot of resources (that we know of) but I agree, if we want to truly master the solar system, we need to practice in larger numbers than we do today.
