    stress on the discs which over time can result in a "slipped disc".  Although the scoliosis did not directly cause the pain, it may be an indirect factor.
    Also, it may not necessarily be that the slipped disc is causing the pain.  About 40% of middle age folks will show a slipped disc on MRI as an incidental finding with no pain relevant to that disc level.  The other sad truth is that surgery to treat a slipped disc does not necessarily resolve the pain, and may even result in new worse pain from scarring.  
    Anyone with any predisposing factors for getting a slipped disc would best be very careful about taking care of his/her back.  Especially don't forward bend with a twist with a load (like picking up something heavy out of the corner of the trunk of a car).  Keep the muscles strong.  Don't smoke.  Eat well.  Because you just know your insurance won't cover whatever happens to you anyway.
